Korean firm beats Toray and Hirano for order
South Korean battery equipment maker PNT has won an order from France’s Saft to supply coaters, TheElec has learned.
PNT will be supplying coaters for both cathode and anode.
The company beat Japanese rivals Toray and Hirano Tecseed for the deal.
The coaters will be used in Saft’s planned pilot line to be built at Nersac. The line will have up to 6GWh capacity.
The deal is thought to be worth tens of millions of dollars.
PNT’s coaters have fast speed and wide width technologies applied. It can coat foils with a width of up to 1,400mm at 120 meters per minute.
The company’s coaters are the only ones known to gain customer verfication for the specification.
It is likely the reason why Saft is choosing them to increase productivity.
Sweden’s Northvolt is using Hirano Tecseed and CIS for its coaters.
LG Energy Solution is also using equipment from Hirano Tecseed.
Saft is likely to use PNT for the commercial production line as well.
Opel, part of PSA Group, is planning to build a 24GWh battery factory in Germany. The factory will go live in 2023. Saft is overseeing the battery technology of the plant.
PSA and Saft is planning to build an identical factory at France as well. The pair will be spending 5 billion euros in total.
